Spot the shrew ... A 2 minute ferry crossing provides a serene prelude to That Big Hill .. AAAHHHH! This is why we ride. Sharon from Longview WA, with her Power Purple Crusoe. "I've never seen so many people on Cycle Oregon walking their bikes," was one comment after the 6-11%, 5 mile climb after a particularly indulgent lunch - no fault of Cycle Oregon!

Wayne and Claudia Baum hail from Salem, OR. Good to see them exploring their own stamping ground before heading off to Botswana or somewhere ... This was Wayne and Claudia Baum's first tour on their Bike Friday Pocket Crusoes. Getting a tweakup here from the Bike Gallery's expert wrench Kelly. It was Florida-hot, yet this was Independence, Oregon. Just 3 miles to go! Andrew checks out an antique 3-D viewer in Independence, mile 55. A Cycle Oregon chocolate on the pillow - a little bit of tongue-in-cheek, nevertheless whispers you're on a modestly upscale tour - organized by people who pay attention to details.

Just look at this giant bike! The extremely civilized accomodations at mile 60-ish, Western Oregon Uni, Monmouth - for those who decided to leave the tarp and Thermorest at home. Each evening on any Cycle Oregon event begins like this - announcements, thankyous, notices, and if you're lucky, some good jokes. Portland band Dirty Martini sung a few amplified lullabies to send the exhausted riders off to la la land. A lot of landfill is created by any big tour. Cycle Oregon tries to balance this with making sure you don't get salmonella poisoning ... never an easy task.
