Cycle Oregon Weekend began with a signup in the inner picnic sanctum of Champoeg State Park ... Max Welker, Bike Friday Club of Tacoma WA leader. How could you not love a face like that? See www.bikefriday.com/clubs Grape vines being instructed how to grow. Rest Stop food: Organic Paley bars, invented by a Portland chef, I was told. A somewhat palate-perplexing riot of ingredients but thankfully no trans fats. Beer mix sans beer - that came later.

Rest stop food: An amusing touch - those cheesy fish. The ubiquitous banana can still hold its own against the onslaught of packaged organic or otherwise snacks. Bagels - how people can eat them untoasted beats me... A nice touch - fruit with no peel or seed. Unlike the awkward orange ... Prof Andrew Black (Portland, OR) cuts a sartorial slipstream on his unique gold Air Friday.

Saturday's blowout gourmet lunch was accompanied by local players and historical re-enactments, no doubt designed to soften the shock of the gi-normous hill to follow ... Vege bake, yams, bread roll, big cookie, orange, drink and some serious potato salad - an that big hill around the corner unbeknownst to the masses ... Andrew Black witnesses a re-enactment of the woes of wifedom Way Back When. "A long, long time ago .." Surreal!
