Charles escorted me to Pahoa riding his recumbent. Charles' 'house' on wheels. A car accident at age 20 left him with a limp; the recumbent has been his saving grace - he's 'lived' on it with no fixed address, traveling all over the USA. http://www.dibella.biz Ironic sign given the fast and furious SUV traffic along the road to Pahoa. Pahoa, a hippie town 20 miles south of Hilo. A bit like Eugene, Oregon - only warmer! That's Charles on the right. powering ahead on his 'bent. A few miles past Pahoa the road gets distinctly lava-infused ...

Papaya tree fams on the way to Kapoho. Striking mounds of volcanic cinders just outside Stacy's property in Kapoho. Made it to Kapoho! Backyard macadamias with cracking device welcome me. Rustic home of Stacy in the Kapoho jungle. I stayed in a cabin over to the right.

The cinder piles look friendlier during the day. The 'hot pond' is heated to bath temperature by an underground Volcanic vent. Lava underfoot near the Wai Opae tide pools near Kapoho, Puna, Big Island. An ulu or breadfruit. Delicious sliced and fried. A favorite Hawaiian snack - the Musubi - is a block of rice topped with one or more 'fillings' - in this case SPAM, and nori. Like a gross kind of sushi.
